Fees

Hourly, a monthly retainer, or a flat fee for defined projects. All three are published here so you can price the work before we ever talk.

The figures below are calibrated for small and mid-sized businesses with approximately $1 million in annual revenue. Scope and fees vary with the size and complexity of the engagement, and all fees are subject to negotiation.

Hourly

$400/hour

For project work and time beyond a retainer’s included hours.

billed in tenths of an hour

Retainers

For ongoing work rather than a one time project. Your policies stay current as the law moves, questions get answered when they come up, and nothing waits for a new engagement to be scoped.

Fractional General Counsel

$3,000/month

Your standing counsel for contracts, privacy, and AI governance work, with priority turnaround and your policies kept current as the law changes. Up to 12 hours each month.

Embedded Counsel

$6,000/month

Counsel working inside your operating rhythm, including standing meetings and support for board, investor, and customer diligence questions. Up to 24 hours each month.

Included hours reset each month and do not carry forward. Time beyond them bills at the hourly rate, and larger projects are quoted separately.

Single projects

Open any project to see what it includes. These are starting figures, and your quote follows a short call so the scope is real.

AI governance

  • AI system inventoryfrom $1,000

A documented inventory of the AI systems and tools in use across the organization, including those adopted without formal approval, each classified by risk level and by the legal obligations that attach to it. The inventory is the foundation for every other governance step, since obligations cannot be assessed for systems that have not been identified.

  • AI use policy, with rollout guidancefrom $1,500

An internal policy governing which AI tools your personnel may use, what information may be entered into them, and what output requires human review before external use. Deliverables include the policy, a condensed version for distribution to staff, and a rollout plan. Appropriate where employees have begun using AI tools in advance of any governing policy.

  • Team or board training on AI and privacyfrom $1,500

A live session for your personnel or your board addressing the AI and privacy obligations applicable to your business, with written materials retained by attendees. Covers current legal requirements, anticipated developments, and the diligence questions raised by customers and investors. Tailored to your industry and to the systems in use.

  • Automated decision-making notices and opt-outfrom $1,500

California's regulations governing automated decision-making technology took effect in January 2026, and Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, and Oregon impose related requirements. This engagement determines whether your automated processing falls within scope, drafts the pre-use notice consumers are required to receive, and establishes an opt-out process your personnel can administer.

  • AI incident response planfrom $2,000

A written plan governing the response to a harmful AI output, an unintended disclosure of data, or a regulatory inquiry. Addresses escalation and notification responsibilities, evidence preservation, disclosure obligations and their deadlines, and incident documentation. Includes a tabletop exercise so the plan is tested rather than merely drafted.

  • Legal risk mapping for one AI systemfrom $2,500

A legal analysis of one AI system identifying which statutes and regulations reach it, its risk classification under the EU AI Act where that applies, and the notice, consent, disclosure, and documentation obligations that follow. This is legal analysis rather than a technical audit. Where a regime requires an independent assessment, such as a bias audit performed by a third party, this engagement covers scoping that audit and advising on its findings rather than conducting it.

  • Vendor and third-party AI reviewfrom $3,500

A review of the AI vendors in your technology stack addressing their use of your data, whether that data trains their models, the commitments made in their contractual terms, and the allocation of liability for erroneous output. Includes a diligence checklist for evaluating prospective vendors. Scope is set by how many agreements are in review, since a company running sixty vendors is a materially different exercise than one running six.

  • AI governance framework, NIST AI RMF alignedfrom $4,500

A governance program aligned to the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. Establishes accountability for AI decisions, the review a system undergoes before deployment, documentation requirements, and the cadence for periodic reassessment. Appropriate where customers, partners, or investors require evidence of a functioning governance structure.

Data privacy

  • Privacy policy, notice, and cookie noticefrom $1,500

The public facing documents describing the personal information you collect and the purposes for which it is used. Includes the website or application privacy policy, the notice required at the point of collection, and a cookie notice reflecting the technologies your site deploys. Drafted against your product's actual data practices.

  • Data processing agreements and AI contract termsfrom $2,000

The provisions your vendor and customer agreements require once personal data or AI systems are involved. Includes a data processing agreement for distribution to counterparties, AI provisions addressing training data, output, and accountability, and negotiation guidance identifying which positions warrant being held. Drafted for reuse across transactions.

  • Multistate privacy law gap assessmentfrom $2,500

Twenty states currently enforce comprehensive privacy statutes, with additional laws taking effect each January. This assessment determines which statutes reach your business, identifies where current practice falls short, and catalogues the risk assessments and records those statutes require. Several of them oblige you to produce those records to the state attorney general on request.

Bundles

Most companies need several of these at once, so they are packaged. Scope tracks the size of your company, so a five person team pays less than a fifty person team for the same deliverable. Quoted in advance, half at signing and half on delivery.

How billing works

Retainers

An initial retainer is due on signing, in an amount set out in your engagement letter. It is earned on receipt and covers conflicts clearance, onboarding, and reserved capacity for your matter. Monthly fees are then billed in arrears, meaning each invoice covers the month just completed.

Projects

Fifty percent is due on signing and the balance on delivery of the final work product. No initial retainer applies.

Hourly

Billed monthly in arrears against an itemized statement of time, so you are never paying ahead of the work.

Scope and fees are set out in a written engagement letter executed before any work begins.
